Audio surveillance, invasion of privacy, paranoia and guilt.
They are all themes explored in Francis Ford Coppola's movie The Conversation from 1974. The troubled main character Harry Caul, portrayed by Gene Hackman, is an audio surveillance expert capable of bugging any conversation between a group of people. For a price, of course. Not to give away too much of the plot, especially for those who haven't seen the movie and plan on doing so, let's just say that one seemingly small and irrational piece of conversation will change the lives of Harry and the people involved.
Let's skip forward in time, twenty-three years to be exact. It's 1997, and this is where The Bug, at this time a co-op between Kevin Martin and Andre Gurov, better known as DJ Vadim, comes in. When you combine these highly productive musicians with the additional help of Dave Cochrane on bass, Simon Hopkins on guitar and Alex Buess on bass clarinet, you get Tapping the Conversation.
This dub-hop rendition of the movie is truely a dive into the deep end. Cochrane's basslines combined with Vadim's beats are the foundation on which the audials and visuals of the movie are reinterpreted on. While the sparse beats advance rather slowly, the textures are constantly moving with K-Mart squeezing tones from his synthesizers, some distorted guitars or the laid-back howls of the bass clarinet.
Although there is a heavy emphasis in the booklet that "absolutely no sonic or visual samples" are taken from the movie, watching the film in advance will help you enjoy the album to the fullest, as the track names are tied to scenes appearing in the movie.
Luckily for us The Bug goes beyond just reheating the suspense and feeling of the original motion picture. Instead, presenting us with their modern take on the menacing and paranoid vibe, this is infectiously catchy cinema for the mind. Enjoy!
"The issues of privacy and individuality, and issues of spying and listening, are as relevant now as they've ever been."

The Sidewinder - Implant (1997)
Continuing the path laid out on the previous release, The Sidewinder bleep and bloop their way through seven tracks on this 12"EP. If you're interested in the originals, go check the Discogs.com marketplace, the full length and 12" are going dirt cheap!

The Sidewinder - Colonized (1996)
The Sidewinder was another Justin/Kevin Martin project of the mid-90s. Basically this was a Techno Animal side project, which released one LP, and a 12" EP on Justin's Lo Fibre label. Another track later surfaced on a compilation.
What we got here is distorted bleeps and bloops, droning beats and whipping synths. It should be no surprise that the "genre mafia" dubbed this as "industrial IDM" .. luckily we don't play along in their game of genres and tags, right?

Curse Of The Golden Vampire - Mass Destruction (2003)
The first album had a much more peaceful approach than this abomination .. this is like an amphetamine rush you can't freak out to. Instead you have to sit still, behave, look out the window, tap that foot nervously .. hope you won't get arrested .. bite your fingernails and sweat like a dog .. very distressing isn't it? This is "love it or hate it"-material. Released on Ipecac Records. Enjoy!

Curse Of The Golden Vampire - The Curse Of The Golden Vampire (1998)
A collaboration between Alec Empire and Techno Animal was released in 1998 as The Curse Of The Golden Vampire. The eponymous release was the only to feature Alec Empire, as its successor was recorded with only Kevin Martin and Justin. No other material was recorded and this project is now no more. Mindblowing harsh electronics, this baby comes highly recommended by yours truly!

Ice - Trapped in three dimensions (1999)
Another Morpheus 12"EP features two "Trapped in three dimensions" remixes. One by Dom&Roland; the other by Alec Empire. It's worth for the Alec Empire-tune alone, a calming "breakcore-El-P-amphetamine"-rap.

Ice - Bad blood transfusion (1998)
A limited UK only 12"EP which came out on Morpheus. The first two tracks, X-1, are two different remixes of the Ice version by Underdog. Ice - Bad blood (1998)
When two different worlds collide the results are usually very bizarre and interesting. That's pretty much the case here too, industrial and hip hop combined into this pleasant, earlubing paste. Guests include Scott Harding: (Drum loops, samples-all tracks), DJ Vadim (just plugging it for awesomeness), Sebastian Laws, Blixa Bargeld, Toastie Taylor, El-P, A-Syde, Sensational and Priest.

Ice - Under the skin (1993)
Happy times, I'm back after a short break .. Ice included Kevin Martin on vocals, saxophone, synthesizer and turntables; Justin Broadrick on guitar; David Cochrane on bass and Lou Ciccotelli on drums. Their first album, Under The Skin, was somewhat similar to the industrial rock of Broadrick's Godflesh, but with a more experimentalist bent, notably via Martin's free jazz-influenced saxophone.

God - Appeal to human greed (1995)
I'm feeling generous and happy tonight, a rare enough incident, and that's why I'll pop out one more God-album. Here's the remix album featuring tracks off of "The anatomy of addiction". The remixes are performed by Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Bill Laswell, Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), Lumberjacks (New Kingdom) and Kevin Martin. 36 minutes of good times, enjoy!Download

God - The anatomy of addiction (1994)
More God for the masses! This continues on the recipe of madness: alto, tenor and baritone saxophones shrieking away, dissonant drumming, waves of droning feedback, fuzzy distorted bass and shouted vocals .. Combine this with the running time of over 70 minutes, and you're in for quite a ride (Don't worry, there's much to discover, it really doesn't get as repetitive as you might think ;). God - Possession (1992)
This is a mix of guitars, acoustic and electric bass, didgeridoo, drums, drum machines, samplers, vocals, saxophones and just about everything else .. so there's like 12 guys playing at the same time? Yes, at times it's like being stuck in Ho Chi Minh city traffic, noisy and chaotic, then there's funky goodness, shouted vocals and a huge groove! It's not easy listening, but very impressive experimentation and one of the most underrated albums of the universe.Download part 1

God - Loco (1991)
Slow and heavy rhythms, saxophone lines, guttural vocals .. this is a exceptional live album, combining elements of free jazz, alternative rock and various other spices. As I really hate the term "jazzcore", I won't be throwing it around that much, and will stick to recommending this to all open-minded people.Recorded live at St. Mary's church and released on Pathological Records.

God - Breach birth (1990)
God was a project created by Kevin Martin in the late 80s. Initially, they played live in the UK, much like the projects of Justin. Justin had met Martin by this time and he was responsible for producing the band's first 2 records, Breach Birth and Loco, the latter being a live record. By this time, Justin had joined the band on guitars, replacing Shaun Rogan. As the years went on, the cast grew, and by the time they decided to disband, there was upwards of 10 members. So .. what's there to say about this? 12" which came out on Situation Two and featured three tracks: "Meat head", "Swine fever" and "Crash victim". Enjoy!

Techno Animal - We can build you (Feat. EL-P & Vast Aire Kramer) (2001)
Feels almost celebratory, my last Techno Animal post for a while. A 12" promotional EP by Matador which was given out on Techno Animal's US tour. "We can build you" is the album version from "The brotherhood of the bomb". The aforementioned song is then mixed by Mr. Oizo. Edition of 1000 pieces. Enjoy!Download

Techno Animal vs. Reality (1998)
Released by City Slang in 1997, this puppy features five original songs and their remix counterparts. The third track, Deceleration, is one of the best tracks ever released by Techno Animal, but that's just my humble opinion. For more info, check here. Enjoy!Download part 1
